The security team showed up within five minutes and took Colette in. Jonas and the crew were notified and went to the Downwater Penitentiary where she was being held. Security was tight, and weapons were not allowed at the penitentiary. They met Colette in a thirteen-by-thirteen feet room where she was already sat down wearing the white and green stripe prison garments of Aratus.

Jonas, Delany, Waylon, Xian, and Mathicus all came into the room. There was only one seat for the visitors and Jonas sat in it. The rest stood around him.

“Got yourself in trouble, didn’t you,” Jonas said. “This is your third and final demerit. You won’t be coming home with us, Demeter.”

“Fuck you, Jonas. What have you done for me to make me feel welcomed? All I’ve gotten from you is, ‘be perfect, or else I’m feeding you to the wolves.’ Well, you got your wish.”

“Why can’t you just follow my rules? They’re easy enough. The rest of the crew have no issues with it.”

“I’m just different, I suppose.”

“Look, I don’t want to leave you here—”

“Then don’t.”

“If you continue with this attitude, I won’t even try to help.”

Colette didn’t reply. She wouldn’t admit it to Jonas, but she was being spiteful, and it didn’t feel good. She wanted to be done with this. She wanted to be at the biosphere where she should be. This crew and whatever their goal was, wasn’t for her.

Jonas continued. “I hate to say this, but you won’t be joining us in taking down the dhourok. You also won’t be able to give me your three ideas. However, the prime minister is allowing me to take you back after we’ve defeated the dhourok. If we can take down that creature, he promises to return you.”

Colette glanced at Mathicus who looked away from her. She shook her head side to side slowly, eyes still on Mathicus.

Jonas looked from Colette to Mathicus. “Is there something I don’t know?” he asked Mathicus, who turned back to Colette.

“No, there’s nothing,” he said.

“The prime minister wants us dead. Us as in humans. He’s not going to let you defeat the creature,” Colette said. “He wants to feed you to it.”

“How do you know this?” Jonas asked her.

“I went to a restaurant to ask for directions to a park and I also asked for the restroom and when I went toward it, I heard the prime minister and Mathicus talking. They were planning to have the dhourok kill us.”

“Mathicus,” Jonas said. “Is this true?”

“Of course not,” Mathicus said. “The only thing Mr. Coopow wants to kill is the dhourok.”

“Why are you lying, Mathicus?” Colette said. “Tell him the truth.”

“That is the truth,” Mathicus said, enunciating the worth ‘truth’ slowly.

“Don’t believe him, Jonas,” Colette said to the captain. “I’m telling you I heard the conversation. He’s not who you think he is.”

“What makes you think I’ll believe you over him? He’s been my ship’s engineer for three years now?”

“I know I’m a big mess, but you have to believe me about this.
